What's the University of Utah like?

U of Utah is one of the schools I've applied to and I want to know what it's like!

academics!

student life

weather

scenery

campus

pros and cons

things to do outside of the classroom

any info is appreciated!!!!What's the University of Utah like?
Lots of mormonsWhat's the University of Utah like?
The University of Utah sits way up high on the mountain bench. Has great views of the Wasatch mountain range to the East. Campus is pretty spread out, but the walk isn't that bad. You can literally walk from one end of campus to the other in 15 minutes or just take the free shuttles that constantly zoom around campus. As a student you can ride the TRAX trains from the U. to downtown and to the southern valleys for free! I think as well as the public bus systems too.

The weather is hot in the summer, and coooold in the winter. We have all 4 seasons here. Winter is already here. It was 25 degrees this morning coming to campus.

Student life is tricky. As Salt Lake is so spread out, it's really a 'commuter' campus. If you wind up living on campus, I'm sure you'll meet people and be more involved with other student affairs. I however was a commuter and rarely ever hung out with classmates other than in class.

Things to do outside the classroom? Well that's up to you. Alot of us are mountain skiiers and snowboarders and discount passes are available for students on campus. We have the best skiing/snowboarding anywhere! Hiking in the summertime is always a blast. Big Cottonwood canyon is about 15 minutes from campus. Despite SLC being somewhat of a food-void town there are good places to eat here. The Red Iguana downtown has some of the best Mexican food in the state. Takashi, although expensive boasts the best Sushi and makes for a great night out with friends. And SLC has a vibrant music scene with bands of all types, so if you wanna go rock out one night, chances are there are shows going on to move your feet too.

Hope this helps.

Can Quadrantid Meteor Shower be observed in Utah?

I'd like to ask some questions about this year's(?) Quadrantid Meteor Showers, which will occur from the end of Dec this year through the beginning of Jan, 2011.

I visited Moab, UT area last month. The last day of my trip, the

sky was so clear and I decided to take a glimpse of well-known

Utah's dark sky. I went to Arches National Park after dark and

was stunned by countless stars as if they were falling from the

sky....

The beautiful night sky still stays in my mind even after I came

back home. I was surfing the internet and found that

Quadrantid Meteor Showers will peak at the beginning of January

next year 2011. I am now attracted to go to Utah again and see them

myself. I am thinking about visiting Bryce Canyon National Park.

To be honest, I know nothing about astronomy, and there

are so many unfamiliar words when I surf the internet. I am just

a first time amateur star gazer and attracted by so many stars over the sky

that I had never seen before.

Here are some questions I would like to ask.

1. Is Utah's winter weather generally favorable for star gazing?

Or usually more cloudy days?

2. Some articles say this year's Quadrantid Meteor Shower will be

better observed in Europe and East Asia. Will USA, more

particularly Utah, still be a good place to view them?

3. Some articles I found say go see the meteor before dawn on

Jan. 4th, 2011. But it seems the peak will be around right after

the sunset on Jan 3rd, 2011??? I know the peak time depends on where you view them, but I wonder when it will peak in Utah, USA.

4. Does anyone who has been to Bryce Canyon National Park for star gazing have any suggestion where particularly in the park I should go ?

If anyone could answer those questions, it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks! Can Quadrantid Meteor Shower be observed in Utah?
There are hundreds of meteors that streak through the atmosphere of the earth each and every day and night. There are times when the earth passes through what was the path of a comet and our atmosphere will pick up a lot of tiny specks of dust left behind from that comet. When that happens, it is called a meteor shower. There are many meteor showers every year.

鈽?Meteor showers can occur several days prior, and several days after, their projected peak time.鈽?

Think about the rotation of the earth. As the Earth spins, it moves into the path of the dust in space so you want to look mostly towards the east and near the constellation that the shower is named for.

The darker the sky in your viewing location, then the more you can see of even the fainter meteors. If you are in a light polluted area, you will only be able to see the biggest and most bright meteors. They are best to watch if you have a friend with you. You do not need any optical equipment. Meteors are best viewed with your naked eyes.

Great Article on Meteor Showers:

This is the 2010 calendar of meteor showers from the International Meteor Organization.

They put the 2010 calendar on a pdf file this year so you can save it to your computer.

Here is their link for that.

Where is a warm place to live?

Hi so first off I'm twenty years old and I got into a car accident back in January. I busted my eye socket, neck and back. From these injures I have sustained arthritis. I currently live in Utah where the weather is always changing and the winters are cold and miserable. I want to move some place warm, but not boiling hot. People have suggested San Diego, California because it always has a steady temperature of around 80 degrees. Is there anywhere else that is warm?Where is a warm place to live?
well, California or Florida would be good choices as they are mostly warm year round. Maybe Hawaii
actually the best place for people with arthritis to live is a place like arizona where it is not only warm but dry, because humidity affects arthritis more than cold does really.Where is a warm place to live?
Arizona, Cabo San Lucas has the nicest year around weather in the World.
California or Hawaii, both are good places to live in.Where is a warm place to live?
Hawaii is warm. And it stays that way throughout the year.
Belize
I live in San Diego. It does not have a steady temperature of around 80 degrees. It gets cold in the late fall/winter, but it may not feel very cold to you considering where you come from and what you are used to. Yes, we have some of the best and most consistent weather in the country but it definitely isn't 80 year round. On winter nights, it can be around 50. There are a few summer days where it is 100 or more. The good thing is that there aren't drastic changes. Most people who come from colder environments view the weather here as perfect. To me, it is the most ideal I have found.

I would say Southern California, Florida, Hawaii, and possibly Arizona would be the options for you as far as weather. Florida is VERY humid, has bad weather/hurricanes and isn't consistent from day to day. Arizona has monsoons, and can be way TOO hot in the summer, and the winters are very cold. Hawaii is very far and not an easy place to move to, but is the only place weather-wise that I would want to live besides San Diego. So I would research San Diego further if I were you. Read the site below for a summary of the best info about the year-round weather here.

Does anyone know anything about the Cedar City, Utah area?

I am currently being forced to relocate from the East coast to around Cedar City Utah area for a corporation. My wife and 18 year old son are going with me.

What my major question is, is what is the place like? IE, humidity, weather, possible job situations for my wife and son, cultures and culture shocks, do's and dont's, traffic, etc.

Anything you can give me will be of great help. Thanks.Does anyone know anything about the Cedar City, Utah area?
You are really lucky to be "forced" into such a beautiful area! Cedar City's population is about 30,000 with much of the population connected to a small university, Southern Utah University (SUU).

*Humidity- Very little, to none at all. Cedar City is a high desert, and humidity is non-existent in the summer months. During the winter, Cedar City averages about 6 feet of snow, but it is extremely dry snow.

*Weather- Cedar City enjoys all 4 seasons. By this I mean cold %26amp; snow in the winter, hot and dry in the summer, mild in spring %26amp; fall. Relatively, Cedar City gets very little precipitation, with most of it coming in the winter and spring.

*The job situation fluxuates with the university's schedule- during the summer, there are many job opportunities available, especially for your son, but during the fall there will not be an open job in town. Your wife may experience the same general trend, depending on what industry she works in, and how much experience she has.

*Culture- there will be 2 factors in adjusting to Cedar City: 1. Small town- there just is not a lot to do if you are used to large cities. There are plenty of recreational activities available, but only a few movie theaters, restaurants, etc. Most stores open late and close early, and very few are open on Sundays, which leads to factor #2- LDS (or Mormon) culture. As mentioned before, the town essentially closes on Sunday. Religion is a major factor in most citizens' lives, and it's likely that you will hear about it as you explore town.

*Do's and Dont's- Really, the biggest Do is to remember that it's a small town. If you fly into a rage at the store, it's likely that the whole town will know in a matter of hours. Treat people civilly, and they will return the favor- if you are nice to people here, they will be VERY nice in return. But the reverse is also true.

*Traffic- Not a factor at all. Ever. Cedar City was recently ranked as the city with the fastest commute in the nation. There just is not enough of a population base to make this a factor. The ONLY time traffic is an issue is during a heavy snow storm, but that is not because of volume, but because some people just don't know how to drive in it.

Here are some web sites about the local area, (the Chamber of Commerce web site is pretty good) and feel free to email me if you have any other questions or if I can help in any way.

Saw a live px on weather channel from Utah, %26amp; the flags were at 1/2 m.,,,WHY??? I Will proll'y get slammed , oh well!!!! I 'am READY !!!!!!!Ask a Dumb question, Why R Flags "at 1/2 mast in Utah, today???
When a President dies, flags will be put at half mast until the last day of that month.
Their like that here in N.C. too. 30 days. Guess we all learned something.Ask a Dumb question, Why R Flags "at 1/2 mast in Utah, today???
You`re not the first to ask this question.....Your answer : Gerald Ford`s death.
flags ahve been at half mast for the death of President Gerald FordAsk a Dumb question, Why R Flags "at 1/2 mast in Utah, today???
I am pretty sure that they are half mast all over the country. They have been for a while, since the death of Pres. Ford. I think they remain at half mast til 30 days after his passing.
There are still a few in Arkansas too. Ford is in the ground, lets move on.

I dont; even think etiquitte calls for flags to be at half mast this long.

June weather in the American southwest?

Is June a good time to be traveling around Utah, Arizona and Nevada in terms of weather?

Thanks! :)June weather in the American southwest?
= In general, Central America has a distinct wet and dry season. Temperatures are relatively similar yearround, but rainfall varies considerably from nearly none at all to 12 inches or more in a single month. The wet season runs from June to October and the dry season from mid November to May.
June is probably a bit too hot if you plan on doing anything outdoors. May is perhaps the last month you can be comfortable in your listed states. For example, in the lower elevation areas, the southwest portion of Arizona begins to start heating up to the mid 90's to low 100's. Another consideration is that you are getting close to the monsoon season of the southwest. Also, it is not so much as the temperature but rather the winds and sand storms. If you ever get caught up in a monsoon sand storm, you will regret it. I would consider travelling in mid-October to experience the best possible conditions.

The North American monsoon (NAM) occurs from late June or early July into September, originating over Mexico and spreading into the southwest United States by mid-July. It affects Mexico along the Sierra Madre Occidental as well as Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, West Texas and California. It pushes as far west as the Peninsular Ranges and Transverse Ranges of Southern California, but rarely reaches the coastal strip (a wall of desert thunderstorms only a half-hour's drive away is a common summer sight from the sunny skies along the coast during the monsoon). The North American monsoon is known to many as the Summer, Southwest, Mexican or Arizona monsoon.[24][25] It is also sometimes called the Desert monsoon as a large part of the affected area are the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.June weather in the American southwest?
June can be very HOT. Temps in the 100"s F./ 32's C. are not uncommon. and American schools will be out of session for the Summer making most touristy places very crowded. If you could come in April, or October you will avoid both those problems, and will find the Southwestern U.S. much more pleasant to visit.
June is a great time to tour the SW. Just so you know, it can get pretty hot there, even in June.

Try this site. It has excellent climate maps. Choose "Southwest". See average temperature, rainfall, and snowfall for any month. Hope this helps!

What to do when a 4 month old Chihuaha throws up?

I have a 4 month old Chihuaha. She eats puppy, small bites Science Food. She also loves her chewy bones.

So what is the best treatment for her to stop threwing up. Could it be she is under the weather? We have a drastic weather change here in Utah. Cold and rainy and windy. But we are in a warm house. What to do when a 4 month old Chihuaha throws up?
Anytime a pet is throwing up,you should give them the baby non flaqvored pediolyte. This will settle their stomach. You should take away water and give the pediolyte in its place.
I have a chi puppy of 3 months. When I first got her she threw up. Try giving very small snacks instead of whole meals, every 2 hours or so. Try also changing the food from puppy to Science Diet small bites adult. I know people say the pups need protein, but I talked to an old vet once who said with small breeds too much protein overloads the kidneys. Mine also enjoys goat milk, which you can buy in a can at the grocery store near the canned milk section. That should cover any protein lost from the change in food. Chihuahuas only grow till 8 months of age, so keep that in mind. What to do when a 4 month old Chihuaha throws up?
Are the Chewy bones Raw Hide?

If so that most likely the problem. Raw Hide is really bad for dogs. Try a nylabone or a Puppy Kong and watch her with it.

Take her to your vet to make sure there is no a medical problem but if RawHide is involved I would bet on that being the problem.
chewy bones such as rawhide can get stuck in the digestive tract and cause blockages ( and death if un treated) i would not allow a small puppy to eat these - if you puppy experiences vomititing diarehea or mor importanly straining to have a bowel movment - don't wait - go to an ER or you vetWhat to do when a 4 month old Chihuaha throws up?
you might to talk to a vet about this.
    Clean it up ????

She might have an upset stomach or the food is not right 4 her.
puppies are like children they get sick sometimes , maybe she ate to much or maybe she did not digest it properly , if it is all the time then vetr help is needed , but if it s just a one off then ignore it , . Watch out for foriegn bodies puppies like to chew all sorts and this can cause an obstruction . if u think you puppy looks ill then seek vet advice , if she is just overeaten or eaten grass tets then keep a check on her diet , and if necessary d=starve her for 12 hours , and then feed her only chicken/ fish / rabbit and rice for a few days
well a pet throwing up is just another thing to deal with in life.. Sometimes after they "go" to the bathroom they will sniff were the went and inhale it into there nose the air may cause them to puke later but that is nothing serious but if she pukes more than 3 times in one day it is time to call a vet
has she had all of her shots and vaccinations? what does it look like? is it green and mucousy? or is it just food? is there diarhea?

the most common sickness that causes vomitting is Parvo. if she hasn't had her vaccinations then it's almost definitely parvo. for a dog to throw up, especially more than once is a serious problem. take your dog to the vet and get her checked out. if it's nothing but a bug, then no big deal. if she got into something like a household chemical, or if it's parvo, then she needs veterinary help, it won't pass on it's own.
Maybe that food is not agreeing with her. It's not one of the better brands,,sorry to say. With all the hipe of marketing it's very hard to tell what is good and what is not good. Science Diet is not a good dog food I am afraid. But if she just started throwing up, it's probably something else. I would watch her very closely, watch for diarrhea too, make sure she gets a lot to drink, and if she is still throwing up %26amp; gets diarrhia, call your vet ASAP.

Some of your better dog foods are Canidae %26amp; Wellness. Your dog is little, so a small bag will go a long way!

Cannon Beach, Oregon weather in November?

My husband and I are planning on taking a trip from here in Utah to Portland, OR to see my husband's mother for thanksgiving. we will be staying in Portland for most of the time but one night we are going to stay in Cannon Beach for our anniversary. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the weather is like around Thanksgiving time near the beach? Too cold to swim? Details would be nice. I need this information so i know what to pack and so i know what to expect. It's my first time at a beach.Cannon Beach, Oregon weather in November?
The water is always very cold. How ever in cannon beach the water is colder if you go to sea side which is very close to cannon beach maybe like 10 mins away the water is cold. In the summer it could even be chilly at the beach. So in November it will be COLD bring a sweater or even a coat . But i think you should still go if you never went have fun. The view there is just breath taking. Also be sure to stop my at mo's the resturant it has very good food and yummy clam choweder. Have fun:)
The water here is always cold. I have lived in Oregon all my life so I'm used to the cold ocean but for other people it's too cold. Alot of people just like to go ankle deep in the water and even then it is cold. The ocean here is like 50-55 degrees. So I would say you don't need a bathing suite. The weather in Cannon Beach in November is usually cold so I would bring warm clothes. It can also be raining because on the coast and inland in rains alot.Cannon Beach, Oregon weather in November?
It is the Oregon Coast, it starts raining in Oct. and doesn't stop until April of the following year. One steady rain storm for six months.

In November, the rain drops fall side ways due to the winds. They sting and they are cold. The water is never warm enough to swim in without a diviers wet suit.
Oregon in November? Do you really need to ask? Wet windy and COLD....But to me it's always beautiful. Oh and it's ALWAYS to cold to swim in the Oregon/Washington Coast. Bring lots and lots of warm clothing...dont let the cold stop you from enjoying the beach...it's wonderful.Cannon Beach, Oregon weather in November?
I live in Portland, my family and I go down to Cannon beach allot and during November I would consider bringing Gloves and a Jacket because it gets pretty cold. And way to cold to swim.

    I hope this helped :)

  • Best time to travel through Iowa, Colorado, Utah, to Reno, NV?

I plan to move from Ohio to Reno, Nevada around October/November. What will the weather/snowfall be like in these areas. I would like to avoid being snowed in.Best time to travel through Iowa, Colorado, Utah, to Reno, NV?
If you're driving you may have issues going through mountain passes. But if you're flying in, should be an issue, but it is possible to have snow. Not likely though, specially in Oct./Nov.Best time to travel through Iowa, Colorado, Utah, to Reno, NV?
    Good Morning

Your routing shouldnt take you thru CO at all.

If you used mapquest [horrible ] that means two things are going on here:

You live in middle to southern OH and they basically routed you I-70W %26gt;I-15 N %26gt;I-80W

Not a bad trip but you have a really high crossing of the Rockies to do using the Eisenhower Tunnel at 11,158 '

A better and lower crossing of the Rockies would be finding I-74W off of I-70W and then to I-80W and straight into Reno

The only place that routing can and does get a little funky in terms of mountainous terrain is in the area of where I-80 %26amp; I-84 meet and then downhill to just short of the junction of I-80 %26amp; I-15 .

Once you get west of I-15 you'll be fine

    Have a safe trip

Btw if you're doing this using a rental truck then I-70W out of Denver shouldn't even be an option at all

Why are mormons from Utah so arrogant?

I swear Lds from outside of Utah are better than Utahs

for instance I had a friend who moved to Utah for BYU, she came back to visit her family here in Texas. She is different, now she talks with a " better than you" tone. And complaining how utah is soo much better than this dump and blah blah blah. And she had the nerve to say " It soo weird being around with a lot of 'colored' people". She is hispanic herself. Another instance was my other friend thinks she's better bc she lives in Utah and all her sisters are in BYU. She didn't straight out said it, but again you can tell from tone of voice.

I went to Utah before sure they're nice people but there also a lot of arrogant people especially in SLC. I love Utah for the weather and terrain but not for the people. Why are mormons from Utah so arrogant?
When I was a Mormon, there was no way I would move to Utah just because I don't like being around Utah Mormons.

Now that I'm an ex-Mormon, I want to stay away from there 10x as much.

I guess it just goes to show what kind of place the world would be if everyone was a Mormon, imagine a world where everywhere was Utah. Scary.
Why are Yahoo users so arrogant to criticise each knickknack what can somebody imagine or not imagine about people who tried to be kind and polite to everybody?

I think to be arrogant has nothing to do with religion or idiology but with character and behavoir. Also Mormons are human beings with mistakes. And their goal should be to work on to reduce these faults. Probably your friend is young. Give her time to grow up. Some need all their life. Why are mormons from Utah so arrogant?
    but shes from texas? right?

i think that because mormons are congregated together in larger groups in utah, it gives them more confidence and makes them more extreme in their viewpoints. this is a common 'mob mentality' when any group has large numbers. they become more confident, extreme and daring in their common views. thats just what i think.

    you say:
"I swear Lds from outside of Utah are better than Utahs"

and THEY, are the arrogant ones?
So um, I have a teacher that's Mormon(or I had) and she's from Utah. Ok, I'm in the eighth grade, so I don't know much about Mormons, but she was amazing. Like, she was super nice and really fun to be around. But now she moved BACK to Utah. So what I'm basically saying is that not all Mormons are like that. But I DO agree that I've met some that think they're better than everyone. So... not all of them are bad; you just have to meet the right people. :)Why are mormons from Utah so arrogant?
I know I grew up in Mormon-ville UT. and my ward was so full of themselves and my parents thought they were God...and the Mormons claim my foul attitude is a lack of unforgiveness, no I grew up with holier then thou people, so I have this attitude about myself sometimes, it has nothing to do with unforgiveness.
My ward had cliches, and the guys always called me names and the adults in the room basically ignored it, they basically ignored me like I did not exist.
Because they think that their religion is the "True" religion of god. Bullshit, their religion is only a centuries old and their claiming that the catholics failed or some crap. They say that polygamy is wrong. Well no ****. Sheesh, sometimes I wonder if they know that Joseph Smith was a polygamist who was sleeping with other mens wives.
That's too bad. I wonder if they realize how they are acting. I'm Mormon, but I can personally say I love where I am living (which isn't Utah btw). I also hate it when people come from Utah and then nag about where you are living.
All the men would have multiple wives, except Utah couldn't be a state then. This isn't a free country after all. When Uncle Sam says you can only have one wife, he kinda means it unless you keep her hidden so nobody knows.
Mormons tend to have a better than you attitude. They think every one else has it wrong they are the only TRUE church of god. Plus their religion teaches that they will be masters to unbelievers.

    http://mmoutreachinc.com/mormons/mormon_鈥?/a>
That's a generalization, not everyone from Utah is arrogant.
i met a lot of nice mormons when i was there. there are a holes all around the world.
If you owned a state the size of Utah wouldn't you be arrogant, too?
    LOL @ Big papa

And I don't all of them are.
There are a lot of arrogant people in Utah. I don't know why.
I think you might be drawing the wrong conclusions.

Ive lived in Texas and Utah and Utah is faaaar prettier. It just is. There are trees and mountains and seasons and lots of green places. Where I lived in Texas was just dirty and cement and crime. So if I were to comment on my preference it in no way implies I think "im better" than anyone. It implies I prefer Utah. Its up to you if you take it personally.

I dont see how you are even tying this into her religion. You could have easily said people in utah are more arrogant than outside of utah, but you made it a religious thing. You sound more arrogant than her.
I am a California Mormon but I lived in Utah for 3 years while my wife went to BYU at the age of 47. There are lots of Mormons in that area, many of which migrated from places such as California. Not all Mormons are the same. I have no desire to live in Utah. However, it is very tempting. The government, schools and politics are infinitely better than Califiornia.

The schools are really upbeat and care about the kids instead of the teachers unions. School Christmas presentations are truely inspiring. It is a very positive experinece for kids. Kids are greatly valued in Utah.

The state spends money on great roads and things that are truely good for the community. Law enforcement is done with respect for individuals.

Housing is inexpensive in Utah. You can buy a house with a minmal downpayment and receive enough rent to make the payments.
    Dunno. . .

I'm a Mormon from North Carolina and I really had to get used to it--I moved out here about 2 1/2 years ago and I thought it would be. . .well, a little less xenophobic.

Here's an example of the culture shock: I'm walking my three big coon hounds down the river walk, and this dude comes by with no less than 6 kids on their scooters, trikes and bikes, couple of toddlers the little wagon that you pull behind your bicycle, and they're all screaming, "Looker, daddy, look at the dogs!" And he says "Yes, three of them is way to many to take care of. Don't touch them little Nephi and little Spencer, they have germs!!"

I was a tad insulted by that. And I'm like "Uhhhhh, dude. Look who's talking. At least my kids don't scribble on the walls and leave cookies in the backseat of the car."

He didn't think that was funny.

Other than this, I have become to love Happy Valley, more or less.

What should I wear to school this week?

I live in Utah, the weather this week is all in the 80's and 90's.

I just want ideas on what to wear. I am a sophomore if that helps. Anything will be appreciated!(:What should I wear to school this week?

I'm planning to go to Utah for vacation mid-November. How should I dress?

I'm from Hawaii so I'm not really used to cold weather.I'm planning to go to Utah for vacation mid-November. How should I dress?
You will definitely need to dress in layers, especially if you are going to be hiking. While the sun will warm things up during the day (not anywhere near Hawaii's definition of warm) the night temps will drop quite quickly. For instance, in the daytime, SLC typically reaches 40-50's and then at night the lows are between 20-30's. On average. So layers are needed, boots for sure. Not flip flop weather at all. Also pack gloves and hat to keep warm in the day in case the winds pick up. Snow is not out of the question. Have fun.I'm planning to go to Utah for vacation mid-November. How should I dress?
Conservatively because Mormons do not like skin.

  • I was thinking about relocating to salt lake city,Utah?

how is it there by means of public trasportaion, weather, and resterants around the area ?I was thinking about relocating to salt lake city,Utah?
My first question would be where do you live now and why are you considering moving to SLC? We lived in a suburb of SLC for almost 2 years and loved it...but I wouldn't say it is the place for everyone.

SLC itself does have public transportation and there certainly are some that extend into the suburbs - but only as a means for getting into SLC. I can't imagine living there without a car, but I have always had one.

SLC and the surrounding communities are wonderful and the scenery is beautiful. There is most definitely shopping and restaurants! There are chains and wonderful private establishments...the suburbs have a lot of choices as well.

The weather is really quite nice. You have all four seasons if you live in the Salt Lake Valley. Because of the low humidity, the summer heat and winter cold see to be less severe. You should keep in mind the "inversion" that happens every winter. I'm not a scientist, but basically what happens is all the pollution and "gunk" sink into the valley and stays there until a good rain/snowfall. It is depressing and alot of people will drive up into the mountains to see sunshine. If you have respiratory problems, I understand it can be an issue as well. It is a weird experience to be sure, but I wouldn't say it is a reason to avoid the area.

You should keep in mind that this is the home of the LDS faith and the state laws reflect that.

It is difficult to "sin" in Utah. For example, alcohol must be served with food and only so much at a time can be served. (Think a cosmopolitan that needs to be served in a glass and a "sidecar" because there is too much alcohol in the drink to be served as a single serving) There are bars and such, but they are mostly "clubs" and you have to purchase a membership to go in. The single people we knew when we lived there typically had a bilfold of membership cards if they wanted to go out bar hopping on the weekend.

While most of Utah is LDS, you will find more liberal people in SLC and Park City.

Like everything in life, it's all what you want. We are not LDS and never really had any issues with our neighbors over it...but we are church-going people of faith and I think that makes a difference. I'm not sure you would be so readily accepted if you were not affiliated with some organized religion.

I would really recommend taking a long weekend and visiting the area if you have never been there. Go to the places you would go if you chose to move there. Talk to the people (they are some of the friendliest I've ever met!) and see if you feel comfortable.

Good luck in your decision!I was thinking about relocating to salt lake city,Utah?
Ok, first of all getting around Salt Lake City is so easy. It's not a wagon wheel its a grid system and it makes life SO much easier once you figure it out. Salt Lake is an interesting place. Public transportation inside Salt Lake is really easy, cheap and efficient by using TRAX, the light rail system. But don't count on any other public transit. The weather is nice, our seasons are very distinct. In the winter its usually about 30-40 degrees and in summer 80-90. There are lots of great restaurants. Outside Salt Lake its hard to find anywhere that is not a chain, but in Salt Lake there are lots of cool, unique places. Theres also a lot to do. Some of the greatest skiing and snowboarding on earth, the Utah jazz, u of u football, aquariums, planetariums, museums and lots of shopping. It's a great place to live!I was thinking about relocating to salt lake city,Utah?
Visited Taylorsville outside of SLC for a few weeks. I was unimpressed. Yes the scenery is beautiful....but you don't live int he scenery. Thee SLC is set up like a wagon wheel and the streets are horrible to navigate....better buy one of those navigational systems for your car. Go on line and look at a street map for SLC, you will see what I mean. UGH!!!

Can i grow orchids in utah?

I'm thinking of gifting a client of mine a potted orchid plant. He lives in salt lake, utah. I know it would be a great gift and he'd really appreciate it however I don't know if these plants survive in a pot. Especially with the weather in Salt Lake. There are many florists selling potted orchids but I'm not sure if they will live. Help me out.

Thank you.Can i grow orchids in utah?
Yes, orchids live in pots indoors. The orchids florists and garden centers sell would die very quickly planted outside anywhere where there is winter. They aren't the easiest houseplants to have, as they have high humidity needs, and usually will need artificial lighting especially for them to be happy. But I have friends who grow them. Definitely include a pamphlet or paper on orchid care if you give this gift, to help the receiver keep it happy.

But there are definitely easier plants to care for, and if your client doesn't not have a green thumb, ask your garden center for "easy" plants. Can i grow orchids in utah?
Orchids should be potted and grown anywhere.

Orchids can be fussy flowers to cultivate; but the attractive blooms they yield are more than worth the effort. Here are several recommendations that will help your orchids to thrive.

Growing Medium: Orchids won't grow well in regular potting soil. This type of growing medium is usually too dense and can collect throughout the plant's roots and suffocate them. Rather than using ordinary potting soil, you'll need to use a specific orchid growing medium made up of a mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The orchids roots should be kept well ventilated by making certain that the medium isn't packed too densely and that you select a pot that is the right size for the plant. You don't want a container that's too large because it will hold a lot of liquid that your orchid doesn't want, which can bring about root rot.

    Orchid Care - http://www.perennial-gardens.com/flower-鈥?/a>

Basics of Orchids - http://www.perennial-gardens.com/flower-鈥?/a>Can i grow orchids in utah?
As stated above, orchids are beautiful but require special care and bloom very infrequently, maybe, if you are lucky, every two years or so. Always kept inside, in indirect light, skylights are great and need lots of humidity, good to place in a large bathroom if space is available.

Below is a short overview of their care. If you think the person would like the routine described in the link, buy him one. Otherwise, something simpler, like a nice African Violet might be more appreciated.
    Great Idea.

Yes - definitely - orchids can be successfully grown in pots in your home without any really special attention. There should surely be a suitable spot.

Just as with any other houseplant, they need light, water and fertilizer.

HELP!! why did my FedEx package go from Utah to Tennessee if i live in California?

i ordered some headphones from Logan,Utah and i chose fedex express shipping so i ordered it on tuesday and its say it will be here friday. but it left the facility and went to salt lake city, and now today it is in memphis. also it says there are severe weather conditions that might affect packages. so my question is why did it go to the opposite side of the country especially if there is bad weather. and when do you think it will arrive.HELP!! why did my FedEx package go from Utah to Tennessee if i live in California?
ALL Fedex packages go through Memphis.

That's where their central sorting facility is located and all of their planes land there and offload for packages to be sorted. Then the planes are reloaded and sent to their regions for distribution. When you track a package with Fedex it will always show a period of time that the package is in Memphis while it's at their sorting facility.

I have found their tracking system on the website to be right on as far as predicting the arrival time. It takes into account the travel to the Memphis sorting facility. The snow will only impact customers who live in areas where the snow is slowing air travel. I would guess where you live there are no delays and your package will be on time as listed by their tracking service.HELP!! why did my FedEx package go from Utah to Tennessee if i live in California?
FedEx packages go to a central hub for sorting. That's Memphis. If it arrived in Memphis on Wednesday morning, it will leave late tonight for California. The package will be delivered to you Friday. Memphis did not have severe weather.

  • Flying out to Las Vegas this week and driving over to Utah to do the Canyons...?

Does anyone know if the weather has been dry of late?

Any recommendations about what to do/visit would be also be appreciated - we are definitely going to Bryce Canyon. Flying out to Las Vegas this week and driving over to Utah to do the Canyons...?
Make sure %26amp; visit lesser known Escalante State ParkThe Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument contains 1.9 million acres of land in southern Utah, the United States. There are three main regions: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the Canyons of the Escalante.

The Monument stretches from the towns of Big Water, Glendale and Kanab, Utah on the southwest, to the towns of Escalante and Boulder on the northeast. It is slightly larger in area than the state of Delaware.

The western part of the Monument is dominated by the Paunsaugunt Plateau and the Paria River, and is adjacent to Bryce Canyon National Park. This section shows the geologic progression of the Grand Staircase.

The center section is dominated by a single long ridge, called Kaiparowits Plateau from the west, and called Fifty-Mile Mountain when viewed from the east. Fifty-Mile Mountain stretchs southeast from the town of Escalante to the Colorado River in Glen Canyon. The eastern face of the mountain is a steep, 2200 foot (650 m) escarpment. The western side (the Kaiparowits Plateau) is a shallow slope descending to the south and west, and is the largest roadless piece of land in the lower 48 states.

What's it like to live in Colorado? Arizona? Utah? Idaho?

Looking to move to areas that are more active, with better views, better weather (little humidity), nicer people, affordable housing, good jobs, and a place to put down roots. Looking at Colorado/Arizona/Utah/Idaho. Any suggestions? What's it like to live in Colorado? Arizona? Utah? Idaho?
I'm from Salt Lake City. The view here is gorgeous. Salt Lake City and Denver are very similar in a lot of ways, but SLC is not as large as Denver. The people are friendly and the economy is very good. Utah has a reputation for overbearing religion, but it's not like that at all. There are four distinct seasons here, too.
i have a friend who lives in the lake havesu area in arizona. She was from wa state, and loved it down there, lots of sun and no rain all the time. Nice hiking areas, close to mexico, and she got along with everyone. What's it like to live in Colorado? Arizona? Utah? Idaho?
I live in Colorado and think it's great. It's definitely active and I have a view of the mountains from my home in a Denver suburb. It definitely has low humidity and we have a lot of sunny days. The mountains are expensive to live in but you'd be able to find affordable housing in the Denver area. As far as nicer people, my experience has been that I see the friendliest people on hiking trails.
I live in a more dessert part of Idaho, the nice thing here is that its a short drive to almost any where the mountains, lakes, Hot springs or other areas. The crime rate here is rather low and housing isnt that expensive. we have more and more buisnesses coming in all the time. The people here are great, nice polite and quite. There isn't much smog here either. What's it like to live in Colorado? Arizona? Utah? Idaho?

Should The Weather Channel skip regular scheduled programs to track current severe weather?

I am on a business trip in Utah and there are severe storms closing in on my hometown of Dallas Ft.Worth or say Austin...then weather channel goes to Storm Stories and I lose all contact with the tracking of these storms...of course I can go to various sites on the web to track this weather but what about the people who do not have access to the web?Should The Weather Channel skip regular scheduled programs to track current severe weather?
    I think they should
They ARE the Weather Channel...and so I think they should preempt regular programming to cover severe weather for those that are interested. Some of their special programs are rather silly (ex: It Could Happen Tomorrow), and should be put on hold while the weather is severe so proper coverage could be given to it.Should The Weather Channel skip regular scheduled programs to track current severe weather?
It could be that since you're in Utah you aren't getting the same programming as they are in Texas. I know that here in Georgia if there is severe weather they at least run the little ticker across the bottom of the screen to keep us advised of what's going on.
I think they should track the severe weather because it may be a life and death issue.Should The Weather Channel skip regular scheduled programs to track current severe weather?
In the interest of SAFETY, one word: YES.

In terms of your situation: No.

I wouldn't fret over it. That aspect should be assumed as part of their programming, no matter WHERE you are.

Of course, that's just my opinion... I could be wrong.

When should my strawberries come up in their 2nd year?

I planted strawberries last year and was hoping for a big crop this year. I live in Utah and the weather is still in the 60s during the day, but I am wondering if the plants should already be up yet or if they dies during the winter? When should my strawberries come up in their 2nd year?
I live in Sevier County, Utah. With your strawberries, it depends on what type they are. Some are more resistant to the cold than others. Most strawberries will be ready to harvest around June, but some can be harvested almost all year long. The plants will send out runners to increase the amount of plants you have; and eventually you will probably have to thin the plants out to prevent overcrowding. The nice thing about that is you can give some of the plants to your neighbors or sell them on ksl.com or another classified ad site.

What cities in Utah, Idaho & Oregon have mountain passes along I-84?

I'm driving from Las Vegas to Portland this winter, and I need to know the name of the cities along my route which have mountain passes where I may need to chain up. I need the NAME of each CITY in order to check the 10-day forecast on "weather.com" prior to my trip. What cities in Utah, Idaho %26amp; Oregon have mountain passes along I-84?
The I84 roads through Utah don't intersect any major mountain passes. Yet you can check Snowville, UT for weather conditions. Coming through Vegas you will be on I15 for a while, you will need to check around Cedar City, UT and Beaver, UT for snow conditions there.

I-15 turns into I-84 in Tremonton, UT, and from there it is mostly flat and a major road, so they snow trucks are out alot if it is snowing. I-15 is mainly flat and doesn't go through any mountain passes. On the Utah/Idaho border there is an area of I-84 that can be closed down due to weather, mainly if there is alot of snow and it is windy. Other than that it is pretty flat through the Idaho/Oregon border. Both Utah and Idaho use the Cell phone 511 for road information.

    Or for Idaho use 888-IDA-ROAD

And Utah use 866-511-UTAHWhat cities in Utah, Idaho %26amp; Oregon have mountain passes along I-84?
Hey there. I can tell you about Oregon. You need to be aware of the towns (sorry not cities) of The Dalles, Hood River and Troutdale. They are along the Columbia Gorge east of Portland OR and usually can be seen as the nastiest weather when we have snow or ice. That usually isn't until Jan or Feb though. So you might be lucky. Enjoy your trip! What cities in Utah, Idaho %26amp; Oregon have mountain passes along I-84?
Why even use that routing at all ? If you go Las Vegas ,Barstow, Bakersfield , Sacramento ,Portland not only is it shorter but because inclement weather won't slow you down it's going to be whole lot faster.

I live in California and it is awesome here. The weather is great and there's lots to do. I would love to live in a place where the landscape all around is green. Is Utah a good move?Is utah a nice place to live?
Crime has no address. So it really depends on what you are looking for.
I would think so.Is utah a nice place to live?
If you are in S. California you should be green year round, Utah is not, they have winter. But Utah is more affordable than California.
i think soIs utah a nice place to live?
No - the northern part is populated with judgmental, hypocritical Mormons and the southern part is like desert, very little plush green.
I live in Utah, and I would say yes. The weather is different than California though. Northern Utah is green and beautiful in the summer and white and cold in the winter. Southern Utah is warm, but not really green. There is a lot to do in Utah, especially if you like outdoor activities like rock climbing and skiing, camping, hiking. It's a nice place to live.

Which of these states has the stormiest weather?

Which state has the most thunder and lightening each year (not including tornadoes) out of these 7 states and please give a reason why you chose that state.

    Colorado

    Tennessee

    Mississippi

    Idaho

    Utah

    Oklahoma

ArkansasWhich of these states has the stormiest weather?
I'd say Oklahoma. It's in the middle of Tornado Alley, and it gets plenty of non-tornadic storms.

However, Florida is proven to be the stormiest state in the USA, even though it is called the "Sunshine State"

I have a four foot tall Maple tree in Utah, full sprouted leaves from Spring, when can I transplant it?

Someone said wait until next winter when the leaves haven't sprouted. Doesn't sound right to me. So, when is the best time to transplant it? In Utah, colder weather arrives at the end of October to close Fall season, warmer weather arrives in April, early Spring, with a rainy season, with trees starting to show buds and some sprouting. Month of May is warmer , Spring and trees are fully sprouted. Winter is December, January, February, March with snow. Summer is June, July, August, September and its very hot here with lots of sun and very little rain.I have a four foot tall Maple tree in Utah, full sprouted leaves from Spring, when can I transplant it?
You can get away with it in early spring but if it's already sprouted leaves it's needing a lot of energy right now to create the food it needs to sustain for the season. It could cause too much stress transplanting it. The best time is in early fall when trees start to go into dormancy. They are no longer using the energy to produce food for themselves. It will cause less shock on the plant and it will be able to focus on creating a strong rooting system in its new environment as it goes to sleep for the winter. As with any transplants, make sure it has plenty of water and it's best to do a transplant on an overcast day. The less sunlight a plant has during the first 24 hours of transplantation is best.I have a four foot tall Maple tree in Utah, full sprouted leaves from Spring, when can I transplant it?
Plant it now.I have a four foot tall Maple tree in Utah, full sprouted leaves from Spring, when can I transplant it?
I've seen it done in the fall season at businesses, but I think it would be better if done in early spring when the ground can be worked because the cool temps will give it time to settle before it starts getting hot. If it going to be done in the summer they should be watered often so the heat doesn't kill them during the transition. Build a trench around your tree to ensure the water doesn't escape so it can soak in deep around the damaged roots encouraging them to grow new ones. As long as you have a good root ball around your tree with soil not disturbed much it should take off. A tree with very few roots will have a 50-50 chance of surviving, especially when it is hot.

Would you rather live in Honolulu, Hawaii or Sandy Utah?

most people might pick Hawaii, but I'm talking about living comfortably with a 85K income, therefore, please include cost of living, people, public school education, entertainment..etc..there's no doubt though the nice weather in Hawaii is a place where no one can compare to. thinking of moving away from Hawaii to Utah, what do u think?Would you rather live in Honolulu, Hawaii or Sandy Utah?
I live in Utah and it is not to bad. the transportation is great in fact we just got front runner going on Saturday which is a train that runs from Salt Lake City to Ogden. We also have Trax which is really great. In Sandy they are building a stadium for Real Salt Lake which is a professional Soccer team. The education system is good here in Utah. The people are really nice.
Dear G-d, don't pick Sandy, Utah!!!! I mean honestly, you still need to enjoy where you live, right???? Money might be tighter in Hawaii, but if those are really the only 2 choices you have, go to Hawaii!Would you rather live in Honolulu, Hawaii or Sandy Utah?
well i live in hawaii, and let me tell you it isn't great. the weather is like bipolar, and its SOOO expensive living here. There are always tourists everywhere, everything's crowded. If you would spend every day at the beach, sure it may be okay, but other than that there's nothing much good about it. there's nowhere to to and nothing to do. like they don't have sonic, target, victorias secret, aeropostale, and a lot of other big stores here. If you like the beach and don't mind everything else i said, sure come to hawaii then.
I used to live in Sandy, it's not THAT bad, the first post made it sound like fire and brimstone for pete's sake..

the school district would be the Jordan school district, it's one of the best districts in the state, the cost of living here is decent, the people are friendly, and not as overwhelmingly LDS as you'd think, but it's still the majority religion of the state, as far as entertainment, you're close to pretty much everything in Sandy, theaters, restaurants, etc..

and Utah's always amongst the safest states to raise a family in..

Good luck!Would you rather live in Honolulu, Hawaii or Sandy Utah?
well, it's really up to you. If you want to live a fast paced life, live in the mainland. If you want a more laid back and all "cruising kine" of life...then stay here. :) simple as that.

Nose Bleeding and Skin Itching Problem at Utah?

Please help if anyone of you have experienced this before. Our family is thinking of relocating from Hawaii (humid weather) to Utah (dry weather), after visiting Utah for 3 days, my husband鈥檚 nose bleeds a lot and skin itches due to the dry weather, we鈥檙e worried that this might be a long term thing if we decide to move over, but some say it just takes some time to adjust since we鈥檙e from a warm humid weather state. I sure don鈥檛 want him to have bleeding nose and itchy skin all year long if we move to Utah, so was wondering if anyone of you have experienced this and did it last forever or just a while. Many thanks for helping!Nose Bleeding and Skin Itching Problem at Utah?
I have moved several times between humid Eastern areas and the arid West, and each time I moved West, i initially had problems (chapped lips, nosebleeds) from the dryness. My body seemed to adjust after a little while each time. When making the adjustment, keep a nasal saline spray handy (such as Ocean), and carry your favorite lip balm.

  • People who have moved to St. George Utah from somewhere else, how do you like it?

What is good about it? List as many things as you can think of, please be specific.

If there are things you do not like about it, mention those as well.

Im really looking at moving there from Nebraska, primarily for weather reasons, as well as the beauty, and good size of town. So I need as much feedback as I can possibly get. Thanks in advance!People who have moved to St. George Utah from somewhere else, how do you like it?
I don't live there but one of my coworkers just moved here from there and I have spent a lot of time in Moab and SLC. It is amazingly gorgeous. The hiking between there and Moab is serious hardcore but there is so much to see and in my opinion it's one of the most gorgeous places in the US. It's so different than any other place. The weather is great. You truly get all 4 seasons (though St George is closer to the desert). You aren't far from Vegas for a quick weekend.

You have several nice reservoirs nearby.

However St George is...well more Mormon than SLC. It's...difficult to live there. The extremists of the religion live right around there. The biggest complaint from people come from those with non LDS children. Many of the children are not allowed to associate with non-Mormon kids. As such the parents have been devastated about that.

My husband and I have spent a lot of time in SLC on the military bases. Military bases are slightly different--as people are coming in and out and many do not share the religious views. St George is not nearly as diverse.

I will say that the BEST thing about Utah is how active everyone is. On the base, people have kayaks strapped to the top of the car. You can get groups together at the drop of a hat to go fishing, hiking, kayaking, snow skiing--there are some great slopes near St George. If you can deal with the religion, it is an amazing area.

Is it ok to take a dog that was raised in California to a trip in Utah?

Is the weather change to extreme? I would love to take my dog! ThanksIs it ok to take a dog that was raised in California to a trip in Utah?
Depends... what kind of dog is it? Most dogs are very versatile and adaptive, so I'm guessing it's okay unless your dog is very old, very young, or a fragile breed like those ones that look like mops.
My dogs came from all over the place and they all travel well with me.

It's totally fine to travel with your dog, and it's actually better than leaving him/her alone. Dogs are able to live anywhere, regardless of weather. Have fun on your trip :)Is it ok to take a dog that was raised in California to a trip in Utah?
Dogs can adapt to anything other than EXTREME weather. Extreme as in Alaska and California. And that's fine too as long as you have all the right protections.

Depending on the dog, you might want to equip him/her with coats and paw shoes. Remember to massage him/her after being in the cold.
    Hey! I live in Utah!

It'll be fine. You might want to buy a sweater or something for them, especially if you gave a smooth or single coated dog, because it's freezing.

But it'll be fine, don't worry about it.Is it ok to take a dog that was raised in California to a trip in Utah?
Sure I take my dogs on trips with me. He has been to OR, WA, NV, UT and ID. He will be going to CA and AZ in the next few years.

  • Is it better to visit Park City, Utah in December or February for a ski/snowboarding trip?

A family friend just moved out to Salt Lake City and have invited us to visit anytime we want. I have school breaks at Christmas time and late February, and was wondering which time is a better time, factoring in ski conditions/weather, general airfare prices from NYC, and crowds. Also which are the best places to ski/board, as some of the family skis, and other snowboard.

ThanksIs it better to visit Park City, Utah in December or February for a ski/snowboarding trip?
You would be better off to come in Feb. Christmas is always busy. The snow is deeper in February, and there are fewer people on the mountains because they are getting sick of winter by then.

Brighton is great if you want to ski and board. The Canyons is great as well. If you want a smaller non tourist type resort try Beaver Mountain near Logan. It is smaller, but not very much $$$ and never crowded

Will I have trouble breathing If I never experienced Dry weather and im from Louisiana?

I never really been out of Louisiana and its usually hot and humid, so what will I have to bring or be prepared for, for when I go to Utah where its dry. Will I have trouble breathing If I never experienced Dry weather and im from Louisiana?
Most definitely, the air around Utah especially is very thin and sometimes called utonoptolipic, this basically means the air is very dry and hard to breathe.

To begin with your lungs may feel as if they're "seizing up", but don't be alarmed, you will only suffer from this very tight chest for about 2 weeks at the most. Then you will adjust a little bit and it will get easier from here.

Which of these states do you think is better to live in? Utah, Oregon or Pennsylvania?

Which is best overall? Nature wise? Weather? Fun things like amusement parks, malls?Which of these states do you think is better to live in? Utah, Oregon or Pennsylvania?
I don't know anything about Utah or Pennsylvania (well, I could pretend I did, but really, It would all be stereotypical info) but I do live in Oregon and it's great!

Oregon is a very "green" state - we're ahead of many other states in recycling, using renewable energy, trying to keep out envorinment as it is (for the most part haha). There are some big cities like Portland, Eugene, etc. But they're pretty environmentally friendly. We don't have smog or a bunch of pollution like many other large cities. They're pretty easy to get around in the cities too as they have great public transportation, special bike lanes, and traffic flows pretty well.

Theres a lot of beautiful countryside as well. LOTS of water in Oregon...waterfalls, lakes, rivers, ponds, and the ocean! The beaches aren't very warm, but I love going there anyways...they are never packed like many other beaches either! I think all or almost all beaches in Oregon are public and you can go and maybe see some people on the beach, maybe not depending on the time of year and stuff. You'd never have to fight for a place to lay your towel though, like many other places.

It rains a lot in oregon. But people get used to it...I kind of like it actually. I'd say the weather is usually pretty mild. It varies a lot. Summer days usualy range from 70-85 degrees...when it gets to the 90s or 100s, everyone goes crazy and locks themselves inside with AC or heads to the beach. Fall and spring are cooler (maybe 50-70ish) and get rain a lot. Winter is usually pretty rainy and cold but not too cold. Theres an occasional week or two of snow and ice, but nothing long term. Snow %26amp; ice and temperatures above 95 are usually big news for us. This is refering to the "valley" area - salem, portland, eugene, etc. The eastern part of oregon is desert-like and has a lot more extreme weather (but really, hardly anyone lives there haha) and the southern part of oregon, like ashland %26amp; that area get quite a bit of snow in the winter. Central Oregon (bend being the major town) is a really popular area as well, especially for "outdoorsy" types. They have lots of fishing, hiking, camping, snow sports, water sports, and a few really cool natural attractions.

There are a good deal of malls, a few amusement parks. Theres a lot of good places for camping and recreational things like that. Fishing is pretty popular in some parts. People like to head to the mountains to ski, snowboard, tube, etc. Portland has a zoo and OMSI which is a fun place to go. There are lots of little festivals and such going on through out the year. Portland has the rose festival, ashland has a shakespeare festival, eugene has a country fair, there are a lot of fairs and other smaller festivals all over (wine %26amp; jazz festivals and art festivals are common). It depends on the area and your interests, but it's easy to find things to do. Some of the better shopping is in the bigger cities, but you can find malls everywhere. Smaller towns usually have some really cute little botiques.

P.S. About the amusement parks, oregon is right next to california, which has some of the best amusement parks...so it wouldn't be far to go for a vacation!Which of these states do you think is better to live in? Utah, Oregon or Pennsylvania?
    Oregon

Pennsylvania is lowest on the list due to weather.

Utah is loaded with Mormon's, not that there is anything wrong with that - just not my cup of tea.......oh wait Mormon's don't drink tea.

Oregon weather is relatively mild all year round. Oregon has no sales tax. Oregon is one of the more liberal states.

Don't know about amusement parks, but that wouldn't even be a consideration for me when picking a place to live.Which of these states do you think is better to live in? Utah, Oregon or Pennsylvania?
This site has excellent climate maps. Compare Utah, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Cheers!

Yea, its beautiful there. I live close to there. Its big, lots of ppl, lots of different races. Very religious place, full of mormons. Nice place tho, lots to offer, but wouldnt reccommend the school system. There are gang problems.

Its gonna get COLD in the winter. Lots of snow, lots of skiing tho!

The summers are very hot and humid.
It is in a valley surrounded by high mountains. Therefore the winters have snow (it WAS the home of the winter Olympics). The summers are hot and dry. To give you an example, it got into the low 100s this past July but it was no worse than GA in the 90s with humidity. Depending on where you are moving from, it could be fairly normal for you (ie, the north, the midwest) or it could be a new experience (ie GA, SC, CA). The best place to look for averages is www.weather.com and type in Salt Lake City.

To anyone who knows if theres snow in Utah right now?

I wanna go backcountry tommorow morning but i dont know if there will be any snow? I checked the weather and it is a 90% chance of snow tommorow. Butttt does that mean there will be enough or will it sprinkle? I heard theres snow up there now but idk.To anyone who knows if theres snow in Utah right now?
There is not really any snow here in Utah right now if there is any then it is way up high. However it is supposed to snow tomorrow even in the valleys starting in the morning in the mountains and is the valleys later in the afternoon. I can see snow coming since the high today was like 50% or less than that. Here is a link to local weather to find out more information just click on weather. http://www.kutv.com To anyone who knows if theres snow in Utah right now?
I really doubt you're going to have enough snow. A 90% chance (you didn't say a chance of how much snow, but probably only 3-5" I'm guessing) for one day doesn't equal enough snow to ski on. You need several inches of good base snow to ski on, and whatever extra powder you get is always great! But I checked the forecast and none of the Utah ski areas are reporting any snow. You can see it for yourself here: http://www.weather.com/outlook/recreatio鈥?/a> I would wait before going backcountry. It's a little early, though resorts that use manmade snow are likely ready to go. But that's not near as good of skiing. For backcountry, wait a few weeks. You need at least several inches of base snow, and it looks like your neck of the woods doesn't have it yet. Hope this helps! To anyone who knows if theres snow in Utah right now?

How expensive is it to live in utah around st. george I am retired and tired of snow I live in ohio?

I am tired of snow wanted to move west what is the best place to move to based on economy and weather thanks you guys rockHow expensive is it to live in utah around st. george I am retired and tired of snow I live in ohio?
I've lived in St. George, Utah for twenty years. Let me tell you everything :)

Generally, the prices are higher in this part of the state compared to other parts like SLC and Provo. Sunbrook is a nice "nook" type retirement community at the edge of the city on your way to Vegas. You can find upscale places in Green Springs (my grandma lives there and loves it) And if you get closer to the golf course it's much nicer. Coral Canyon is a sweet little set-up just past Washington, it's definately out of the way and has it's own little community going. If you've got money, there are many gorgeous locations around St. George like the Ledges and out by Tuacahn (the broadway in the desert ampitheater) Hurricane lives up to it's name (lived there for five years) it's beautifully scenic, usually cheaper, cooler and has a nice slow pace about it. But the winds do come. Cedar City, though only an hour away, is a drastic change in climate and it snows a lot!... If you're not in a terrible rush, I'd attend the Parade of Homes in February (i do every year) it'll give you a sense of where and what everything is.

All in all, southern Utah is one heck of a pretty place. There's a lot of variety, new and old blood, hot summers and lovely seasons, golf courses, and friendly folk.

Hope that helped :)How expensive is it to live in utah around st. george I am retired and tired of snow I live in ohio?
The cost of living is fairly low, but beware - St. George was a nuclear test site, and it is a major cancer cluster. You can live just as cheaply somewhere else in Utah and avoid all the contamination and radiation.

Where could I find a website that show the Density Altitude for Dugway, Utah?

I need to find the current density altitude for the Dugway Proving grounds, or at least the current weather conditions to calculate it.Where could I find a website that show the Density Altitude for Dugway, Utah?
Since you mention density altitude, I assume you know what it is and how it is used. As a light aircraft pilot myself, I use it often during the summer, to know if I will have enough runway to take of from short fields in the mountains.

You will find many sites that will give you both atmospheric pressure and temperature for Dugway. But I don't think you will find anyone that gives you the density altitude. This is because it is only used by light aircraft pilots and ... there are very few of us. For example, do you know of any weather forecasting site that gives the cloud ceiling in altitude above ground level? I don't and yet, this is one of the most important thing I expect from a weather forecast because if the ceiling is e.g. 500 ft AGL, I can just forget to go flying VFR.

In my pilot handbook (I own and fly a Kitfox III) I have a density altitude diagram where I plot my actual altitude based on QNH, then the temperature and, from that, I find the density altitude that gives me a higher elevation if the temperature is above ISA of 15 C. From that, I can look up what is my expected take-off distance, considering that moist air and a long grass runway will also take some of the time before I am airborne.

Try LL Bean out of Freeport ME .I've owned one of their baxters state parkas for 15 years and have never had problem with it. Winter in UT is cold and dry but winter in ME is cold and damp and their stuff seems to be up to the task

  • Why do I always feel so tired when the weather is cloudy?

If I didn't have two small children, I swear I could sleep all day long on a cloudy day. I always wake up so sleepy and end up dragging my feet all day long when it's cloudy outside. Is there some sort of scientific reason for this? Winter is the worst for me. I live in Northern Utah, and it has snowed like crazy this year. I've felt like a bear who should've be in hibernation with the clouds that had been over my head! Why do I always feel so tired when the weather is cloudy?

Dec 26 I80 through wyoming to park city utah?

    Hey Guys,

I'm driving from Washington DC to Park City Utah right after Christmas. I have a Ford Focus, and i'm weary of the weather conditions. I'm thinking of taking I70 to I80. What are the roads like, and has anyone done this trip before and can you offer some advice?

Thanks!Dec 26 I80 through wyoming to park city utah?
Who knows? The best thing you can do is inquire the state's road condition website. See link below.

I made that last part up myself. 鈥?Thumper

Why does the weatherman always change the weather?

I mean, why doesn't he just pick one temperature and precipitation and stick with it forever is stead of changing it every single day? I'm tired of having sunny skies one day, then stormy skies the next.

live in Utah, USA if that makes a difference from weatherman to weatherman. Why does the weatherman always change the weather?
Because the earth's atmosphere is dynamic, not static. The weather forecast changes as conditions change, and as more and better information becomes available.
The weatherman has no control over what the weather actually is. The weatherman is just a personality who tells you what the weather likely will be. He isn't God...you know. He is just a news personality, who receives information from professional atmospheric scientists who study the present conditions and make guesses about what might happen.

If you are wondering why he may change his prediction for any given day, that is because he receives MORE INFORMATION off of which to base the prediction. Why does the weatherman always change the weather?
The weatherman gets his data from computerized weather models. (google 'weather online expert charts' to see them.)

There are loads of different models. Some of them are very good at predicting weather in the short term other medium term. The weather man must combine both short/medium and use his expert knowledge to make a prediction on the weather.

Whats more, these models are updated FOUR times a day. The computer will change things four times a day. Hence, the weather mans prediction changes
    OK. I'm your new weatherman.

For the next 3 months the low temperature will be 104 deg F and no rain.

For 1 month after that the high temperature will be 40 deg F and the low temp 33 deg F and it will rain 24 hours a day for 30 days.

For the 5 months after that the high temperature for the day will be -48 deg F and it will snow 6 inches every second day.

Enjoy your weather. Why does the weatherman always change the weather?
Because the weather 'decides' what the weatherman reports.

    He doesn't get to 'pick'.
He does not makes changes. He purely reports based on data made available to him periodically.
Because they can't correctly predict the weather that far in advance. They can only make "lucky guesses".

How bad is it for my vehicle (Jeep Wrangler) if its parked outdoors during a cold Utah winter?

I am worried about the harmful effects the winter weather (rain, snow, cold) may have on my Jeep. How bad is it for my vehicle (Jeep Wrangler) if its parked outdoors during a cold Utah winter?
The biggest issues will be your radiator and salt. Make sure your radiator coolant is adequate for really, really cold temperatures, depending on where it will be located. Likewise, in bad weather, UDOT tends to put a lot of salt on the roads. We just got a used car that has tremendous body damage from commuting down I-80. But, I might note that I leave my car outside all year round and have for decades. The only bad aspect is that you have to clear snow off at times.
My Jeep was parked outside year round for a couple years with no ill effects. I'm in northern Indiana so we have some killer winters here. Just make sure that if you run it though the car wash occasionally to get all the road salt off the underbody. If you have a soft top you'll need to be careful with the windows, they crack very easily in the cold. Otherwise have fun in the snow. How bad is it for my vehicle (Jeep Wrangler) if its parked outdoors during a cold Utah winter?
I would worry about my heater, a rag top can't hold in much heat!
If you are only worried about the exterior of the car they are absolutely right. If you are worried about the wear on the engine you might want to read some great winter tips at; http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/A鈥?/a> or even invest in a extrerior engine block warmer http://www.padheaters.com or http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Produ鈥?/a>How bad is it for my vehicle (Jeep Wrangler) if its parked outdoors during a cold Utah winter?

Besides filling the gas tank and checking the oil, battery and anti-freeze on your car, it's equally important to let cars warm-up.

The dangers of starting a completely cold car "metal fatigue in the car, the engine oil isn't going to be where it needs to be, that can cause extreme wear and tear in situations where there should be oil in certain places, the oil doesn't flow when it's cold.

Keeping your vehicle clean by frequenting a professional car wash every 10 days is one of the best defenses in protecting its finish.

Professional car washes use biodegradable cleaning solutions, far less water than do-it-yourselfers.

One of the most critical times to wash your vehicle is immediately after a rainfall. Even after the lightest rain shower, the water evaporates, but the acid remains on the vehicle's finish. Acid rain is caused when high concentrations of emissions from fossil-fuel burning engines or plants react with your car's paint to form sulfuric and nitric acids. Although you cannot prevent acid rain, you can keep it from ruining your vehicle's finish by removing it at a professional car wash.

In some parts of the country, mud is so prevalent that it causes a constant problem for vehicle finishes. Unfortunately, the importance of cleaning mud from the undercarriage is often overlooked by motorists. Undercarriage treatments, offered by most car washes, remove caked-on mud that holds moisture to metal and causes rust and body rot around wheel wells and door sills.

Snow and sleet can result in the same damaging effects as acid rain and are often compounded by chemicals in road salt. To prevent this damage, washing your vehicle during the winter is highly recommended -- especially in geographic areas where snow and road salt are plentiful. This potential for damage can be minimized and even eliminated by the following ICA suggestions for cold weather car washing:

If at a full-service car wash, ask one of the attendants to thoroughly dry the area around the inside of the door and trunk, as well as around the area where a power antenna is mounted to the car. (This is usually done without being asked, but it doesn't hurt to offer a reminder.) If at an exterior-only or self-service car wash, bring a few extra dry towels with you to perform these tasks yourself.

Immediately after washing the vehicle, open and close all doors, the trunk, and other outside parts of the car with locks several times before parking it. Periodically apply a good silicone spray to all weather stripping during freezing weather. (Water will not collect evenly on silicone-treated surfaces.) A professional car wash can help protect your vehicle from the harsh elements of the fall and winter weather. When you follow these basic car care tips, you'll extend the life of your vehicle's appearance, and feel great driving a clean car.
